Now Kocoum came to Orapax and brought her many fishes, for which she gave her best gratitude. He was a tall man from Youghtanund, much grown up. She felt pleased and comforted that he dwelled so near her father. Her older sisters told her that he had slain a Monacan in ambush already, and indeed he wore a mummified human hand as an ornament to his hair. Yet for a knife he carried but a sharpened reed. The next day he brought her a needle from the Tassantasses, which she gave to her father. He smiled and told her to keep it. Then she did not see Kocoum for several days, after which he brought her a bear, not overly fat but still her bear, which she accepted with prideful pleasure, and everyone feasted on it. She had already begun to believe that in him lay her safety, as her father had said.
